Ardee Tennis Club

New Members Always Welcome

Welcome to the Adult Tennis section

Welcome to the Adult Tennis section. Adult membership comprises all adults and students over 18. Our club is keen to promote as high a level of tennis activity as possible. We organise events that encourage members to play every week and throughout the year we organise large set-piece competitions. Our regular events include Friday Night Tennis and the Mens Singles Ladder. Our large set-piece competitions include the Brophy-McDonnell Cup, Club Championship and the Winter League. In between we encourage members to organise games amongst themselves.

Friday Night Tennis

Every Friday night the club holds a mixed doubles club night, starting at 6.45pm. Members enjoy this event as its a great way to finish the working week and start your weekend. Homekeepers strongly support this event as its a great excuse for two hours of freedom. Every week you will play with a different person and you can be sure of four or five short matches against random opponents. The random nature of your partner and opponents means the event is a great way to meet other members. This is very important for new members and we strongly encourage new members to support this event. Finally this event provides hassle free tennis where you just turn up and play and don't have to organise anything.

Mens Singles Ladder

For the fitter and more adventurous member the club runs a Mens Singles Ladder. This event gives men (and now women if they wish to join) a framework to play frequent singles tennis within a competitive environment. May the best man (and woman) move up the rankings !!!

All jokes aside this is an important on-going competition as it promotes singles tennis within the club, promotes fitness amongst the players, allows players to play competitive matches on a frequent basis and helps the club organise player rankings for the major set-piece competitions throughout the year.

Brophy-McDonnell Cup

The Brophy McDonald mixed doubles tournament was started in 2007. The competition was created to honour Garrett Brophy (now deceased) and Derek McDonnell
who both played a leading role in the creation of our club. The format of the competition is mixed doubles and is normally played over a week. The competition is normally played in late Spring or early Summer.

Club Championship

The main event in the tennis calendar is the Club Championship. It is the event with the largest entry and greatest number of events. Participants can enter singles, doubles and mixed doubles events. We club tries to cater for all standards of players and will split events into A and B sections to generate as much genuine competition as possible. On a lighter side (but also true) this event is where reputations are won and lost and where members settle historical scores. This competition is normally played in September.

Winter League

Winter is the hardest season to get members out onto the courts. The nights are dark, frequently it can be wet and it always seem to be cold and windy. To encourage members to leave the warmth of their homes the club runs a Winter League that starts in October and runs for most of the Winter season. The format of the event can be doubles or mixed doubles depending on member demand. One round is played every week and winners are announced at the end of the league. In the past this has been an enjoyable event and members look forward to it every year.
