Welcome to the Junior Tennis section. Junior members are under 18 and in either primary or secondary school. Those in primary school we define as Juvenile members and those in secondary school we define as Student Members. Our club recognises that our junior members are the adult members of tomorrow. We are keen to promote as high a level of tennis activity as possible for our Junior members.
The main event every year for Junior members is the Summer School where participants learn the basics of tennis and practice three days a week for a number of weeks. The Junior Club Championship is held after the end of the Summer Camp, typically in late August. This competition allows Junior members to put into practice every skill they have learnt in the Summer Camp.
Throughout the remainder of the year the club holds a series of one-day competitions, called the Four Seasons Tournaments, where Junior members can play in a "round-robin" style doubles event. This one-day competition will take no more than three hours to complete and parents are welcome.
In between we encourage Junior members to organise games amongst themselves.
Summer School
The Ardee Tennis Club Summer School is the main event in the Junior member's calendar year. The Summer School is where Junior members can learn the basic skills of tennis or else improve on their existing skills. When Junior members sign up for the Summer School they are not committing themselves to turning up every day every week. Instead participants can turn up any day that they chose. The club recognises the time pressures junior members and their families are under and seeks to be as flexible as possible.
The Summer School normally runs from early July to the middle of August. Supervised classes are held three days a week, typcially Monday, Wednesday and Friday. In the mornings younger Juveniles have their class from 10am to 11am and older Juveniles have their class from 11am to 12am. In the afternoons Students have their class from 2pm to 3.30pm. Only tennis club members can enter the Summer School and there a nominal cost per participant per day (2007 Summer School cost per day was €1.50).
The Summer School seeks to teach participants the basic techniques such as serve, forehand, backhand and volley. However the most important lesson that the Summer School aims to teach is that tennis is fun and a great way to exercise. In today's world of sweets, fast food and television our club wishes to do all we can to promote sport and fitness within our community.
Junior Club Championship
The Junior Club Championship is the main competition in the tennis calander year. It is typically held in late August every year. For many it is a great way to put into practice skills newly learnt in the Summer School. For others it is just a great competition that allows them to play in singles, doubles and mixed doubles events. Where numbers and standards permit the club runs A and B sections so that participants face genuine competition from players of their own standard.
