Ardee Tennis Club

New Members Always Welcome

Welcome to the Mens Singles Ladder Competition

Ardee Tennis Club does very well in doubles and mixed doubles competitions but doesn't appear to succeed in singles game play. The goal of this competition is to promote and improve singles tennis for men within the club. Eventually it is hoped that rankings within this competition will be incorporated within other club competitions.

From 28th August 2007 women can now enter this event. This decision was made as no womens singles competition is available at present. As the numbers of women interested in singles increases the club will create a Womens Singles Ladder. Until then men, keep your langurage polite and your appearance well groomed. Congratulations to Caroline Filgate on being the first women to enter this event.

Participants should have most of the other member contact details themselves. If you need an individual contact number text the club mobile on 085-1507484, and/or include your email address for the complete list of participant contact details.

Rules of the competition and match scores to date are included further down the page. Good luck to everyone and see you on the courts.

Rules of the Competition.

1. A challenge can be made to any player ranked 3 positions higher than your ranking. For example if you are ranked 10 then you can challenge any of the players ranked 7, 8 or 9.

2. Match duration is first to 10 games. Only if both players agree can the match duration be extended to best of 3 or 5 sets. This is to reduce the time commitment and encourage more frequent challenges. Sometimes the notion of a 3 or 5 set match can be off-putting.

3. When a challenge is made the match has to be played within 3 days of the challenge or the challenger is deemed to have won. The challenge duration can be extended to 5 days if short-term scheduling proves too difficult and both players agree. The 3 day challenge period commences the day after the voice challenge or mobile voice-box challenge has been made.

4. Once the match has been completed please text the result and score to 085-1507484 as soon as possible so that the rankings can be updated.

5. If a challenger has lost the match he cannot rechallenge until he has challenged someone else. The exception here is the second ranked player who is free to rechallenge the top ranked player. Once a challenged player completes his match he is free from further challenges for a period of 3 days to allow him to challenge up the rankings.

6. If a player is unable to play due to short-term injury or other commitments please inform me, Sean O'Shea, on 085-1507484. This player cannot be challenged and his ranking is preserved. However the ranking cannot be preserved indefinitely and will be reviewed at an appropriate time.

7. Matches are to be played in a polite and courteous manner. To avoid disputes each player has the absolute right to call a ball as he sees fit on his side of the court. The other player has no right to appeal or grumble. However, for the sake of harmony I would encourage players to replay any point where a disputed ball threatens to disrupt the match.

8. These rules are subject to change at any time to improve the administration of the competition. Players will be informed of any major changes in rules.

9. All ideas to improve the format of this competition are very welcome. Also spread the word and try to encourage other men to participate.
